Delicious recipes true to new Southern traditions in cooking
I've had my copy for several years. It has been used time and time again. I've not tried a bad recipe yet. My children enjoy the food, especially the poppy seed chicken. Another favorite is the plantation rice. There are too many fabulous recipes to list them all. Get your own copy, you will NOT be sorry.

SPADA - Anthology of Swordsmanship
SPADA is a journal that contains some of most current ideas on historical swordsmanship by a number of the field's leading researchers. As a student of historical swordsmanship myself, I think it is an excellent step in the right direction for the progression of this school of study.

As far as the contents of the book are concerned, my hat goes off to the editor, Stephen Hand, for distilling such a diverse, and yet interesting range of papers from the vast array of excellent treatises available.

The book also features some interesting reports on some of the most recent activities undertaken in the WMA community. This provides the reader with a very good 'big picture' perspective into what advances are being made in what fields, and an appreciation for the vast range of people who are now interested in historical swordsmanship.

With regards to it's practicality, the book caters for many different tastes - whether you are interested in the finesse of renaissance fencing, or simply a medieval re-enactor using the trusty 'sword and shield' method. SPADA provides useful insights and a greater understanding of historical methods of fighting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a greater appreciation of historical swordsmanship, and anyone who is curious to know what the swordmanship community out there is doing. I rate it as a 'must have' item, and I look forward to more SPADA releases in the future.

cheers

Spartacus
Published in Paperback by B & W Publishing (1996)
Authors: Lewis Grassic Gibbon and J. Leslie Mitchell
Average review score:

Immensely rich
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (or James Leslie Mitchell) has written a novel of Spartacus that is as refreshing as it is clearly one of the forerunners of historical fiction. Opening through the eyes of the eunuch Kleon and his mission to find the heroic leader of the Slaves the novel centers more around Spartacus 'inner circle' and his relationship with Elpinice. Book I is told through Kleon and deals with the period up to the defeat after the Battle of the Lake. Books II and III with Spatracus' victories until we move towards the well-known and inexorable end on the Appian way at the hands of Marcus Licinius Crassus at the end of Book VI. The novel ends as it begins, with Kleon, and his crucifixion
The novel is well written, well-paced and pauses sufficiently to voice greater philospohical views than historical novels of the current generation. It is easy to see why this has been heralded as one of the great novels of its genre.

Speedy Death
Published in Hardcover by Chatto & Windus (February, 1988)
Author: Mitchell
Average review score:

Mitchell's First Book a Classic
SPEEDY DEATH is Gladys Mitchell's first novel, and begins with the death of the famous explorer Everard Mountjoy - drowned in his bath. There is, however, one particularly odd thing about the corpse: the man was not a man - but was instead a woman - which complicates both detection and personal matters, especially when the victim was engaged to the spinsterish and pathologically jealous Eleanor Bing, who is later found drowned in the bath - before coming back to life...

As with the best of Gladys Mitchell's work, the book is surreal and pokes fun at several cliches of detective fiction: in this case, the detective. Mrs. Beatrice Bradley is Gladys Mitchell's series detective, and the most original detective ever to have appeared. She is a combination of a wicked witch, a psychologist, and a pterodactyl with the smile of the Cheshire Cat. She investigates, cackling to herself, and is promptly arrested for the second murder in the book. All manner of complications ensue, with broken clocks, fob-watches in water jugs and bathroom stools all taking on sinister qualities. The plot is memorable and lively, the characterisation is excellent (the two best being Eleanor Bing and Mrs. Bradley), and the detection and courtroom dramas are also first-class. All in all, an excellent mixture of wit, satire and originality.

Sprung from Some Common Source: Investigations into the Prehistory of Languages
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (September, 1991)
Authors: Sydney M. Lamb, E. Douglas Mitchell, and Mitchell E. Douglas
Average review score:

ANCIENT ORIGINS
This collection of 17 studies investigates various aspects of the classification of Indo-European and other major language families. Some of them confront the question of whether Indo-European and certain other families had "sprung from some common source." With comparative linguistics stifling from an excess of caution in recent decades, the search for the answer to that question has here been broadened in an attempt to find a deeper common source than Proto-Indo-Euriopean. This book surveys the progress of genetic classification of languages down the years, records recent developments and indicates abundant opportunities for further research. The contributors include some of the world's leading investigators of genetic classification, such as Robert Austerlitz, Ian Catford, Sheila M. Embleton, Marija Gimbutas, Joseph Greenberg, Winfred P. Lehman, Saul Lebvin, Edgar Polomé, Jaan Puhvel, Alexis Manaster Ramer, Merritt Ruhlen and Vitaly Shevoroshkin. The contributors look beyond comparative Indo-European linguistics in two ways: (a) by considering genetic relationships outside of the Indo-European family towards sources more ancient than Proto-Indo-European, and (b) by investigating the mythology, religion and cultures of the early Indo-Europeans. Part One contains a general introduction plus a study of the work and influence of Sir William Jones. Part Two discusses the languages and cultures of the Indo-Europeans and gives archaeological insight into the peoples that preceded them. Part Three presents a historical perspective on some problems in the reconstruction of Indo-European and diiscusses some recent work on various hypothesized relationships of Indo-European to other language families. Part Four surveys potential cousins of Indo-European, like Uralic, Altaic and Kartvelian. Part Five deals with methods of investigation, including a note of caution to researchers who might exceed their evidence, techniques that can be used to refine lexicostatistical studies, and a computer programme for developing and testing hypotheses of distant relationships. The book is beautifully illustrated with 15 drawings (in Marija Gimbutas' chapter), and 9 maps.

Star Salesperson: Using Astrology to Get to Yes
Published in Paperback by Jupiter Returns Press (20 August, 2002)
Author: Thomas Mitchell

Why did it take so long for this books to be written?
I have been selling for over twenty years and am sick and tired of the same old sales training courses my boss makes me attend. The Star Salesperson was written by a person who knows how to sell and how to get to know people. This book has been tremendously useful and I love it!
